Indigo Dyeing Workshop in Kyoto

Immerse yourself in the ancient art of shibori indigo dyeing in the heart of Kyoto. Led by third-generation dyer Emi Kawashima in her Fushimi district studio, this intensive day workshop covers the preparation of fabric using traditional binding, folding, and stitching resist techniques before the dramatic first dip into the fermented indigo vat. Participants work with natural cotton and silk fabric, create at least two complete pieces, and leave with a deeper understanding of why Japanese indigo — its particular richness, its gradual fading toward a silvery blue, the way it softens with wear — is unlike any dyed textile produced elsewhere.

The studio is located in a renovated machiya townhouse surrounded by a small indigo garden where the Japanese ai plant is cultivated in season. Participants are welcome to arrive early to walk the garden and observe the morning preparation of the dye vat.

Bamboo Weaving in Rural Oita

Deep in the bamboo forests of Oita Prefecture — home to some of Japan's finest madake bamboo — this two-day residential workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn the fundamentals of traditional Japanese basket weaving (kago ami) from master craftsman Satoru Beppu. The workshop begins with an early-morning walk through the bamboo grove to select and harvest raw material, then proceeds through splitting, scraping, and conditioning the bamboo before the weaving itself begins.

Participants complete a small round basket on day one, then undertake a more complex hexagonal weave on day two. All meals are provided in the Beppu family farmhouse, where guests also have the opportunity to see the full range of Beppu-san's work, including the large market baskets and elegant flower arranging vessels for which he is known. Accommodation in the adjacent guesthouse can be arranged.
